"It would be better to die than be captured like this."
Images which remain burning before my eyes: 35,000 people, lines of prisoners, roped and marching through deserts full of bodies, up and down the mountains of Afghanistan--whether or not they'd had anything to do with the bless'ed jihad--under the brutal auspices of the Northern Alliance and watched over by the US. Dozens of people, human beings all, crammed into five-people-cells in the prisons of Kandahar, with horrible wounds--one for instance with half his jaw blown off, screaming for death and release from his agony, for days upon days--and Western journalists arriving on the scene, ignoring the horror of these lives and inquiring only after Mujahid John Walker Lindh... The next scene: David Hicks, last year of whom I read of him in defiance, cursing out the guards at Camp X-Ray in his Aussie accent--now a man half-mad, driven half-mad, spending his days in "Camp Echo" , a newly-built ultra-secret American incarceration camp named in irony (the solitary confinement is such that you do not hear your own footfalls) catching and killing rats with his hands--he has renounced his Islam, speaks to none, shaved his beard, no longer answers the adhan.
Emad sent me the story in the Mirror a few days ago but i wasn't sure if i believed it, mainly because the Mirror itself is a tabloid with dubious content. Especially as per parading prostitutes--i mean, in an army camp? Still, now there is corroboration for much.
Further: last year on this date Rachel Corrie breath'd her last, passing forevermore into the land of allegory, shadow and Light.
One day all will taste the Hell they prepare for themselves. In the meantime, we must rise for the True. Life is simple that way. In this there is no grae.
