and then our exile

We have been having this argument for weeks--whether languages other than Arabic are defined by the principles it is derived from or by those who speak it. It had me defending Canadian Englisch as the best of both worlds (between the British snob and American boor) and E. going on and on about how one must use the language in its context, ie. American Englisch is correct Englisch, all around the world more people use this than any other kind, etc etc.
Two days ago, though, i got handed a "triple slam-dunk elbow leap in your face through the net proof against British language and by extension Canadian language." Basically--we were doing our researches, and i knew the word 'colour' was the old french spelling, but what i did not know was that it was taken from the Latin "color". Ie--in the asl, there's no u, and i...have to stick to principle. i honestly think the colour of the armour of my ardour is honourable, the u is sophistication, but...unless any of you can come up with more convincing proofs for the "chiefly British variants", i'm going to have to start spelling colour as color.
What blatant horrour.
