'ala fanain wahnan wa inniy lanaa'imu
kadhabtu wa biyti'l-Lahi law kuntu 'aashiqan
lamma sabaqtaniy bi'l-bakaa'i'l-hamaa'imu
the pigeon cooed in the darkness of night
on a branch, in weakness, while I slept
I lied--and I swear by God, were I [truly] beloved [of Him]
never would the pigeons outdo me in weeping
--quoted in part XIV of /ayyuha’l-walad/
A few weeks ago i passed L. on the road near the post office, a tall blond German who was in my JD classes. He did not know me and I kept walking. Yesterday I passed A., a short American brunette, walking to a bus stop. If people I used to see every morning five days a week, six months ago, no longer recognize me, wonderment is for people at home and what August shall bring.
