and then our exile

Sunday, February 12, 2006 at 9:41 p.m.

the sound of silence, now is night. piles of dishes in the kitchen, the many departed visitors. i dressed up today, a suit and bowtie, it was the emphasis of magnitude. after everyone left usman asked where salwa ("sawwa") had gone before announcing he was ready for bed.

but i have three papers to write for tomorrow.

the cradle of the best and the worst

"taking a break?" he smiled in my direction. i was sitting back, waiting as everyone around me took down essay questions from the overhead.
"i'm, uh, not in your class," i heard my voice say. and immediately winced, that was a very blundering way to do this.
his expression faltered, the rest of the class paused to half-turn in their chairs. g laughed from the front row.

more on cartooning:
1- the same editor was approached by an independent cartoonist three years ago with caricatures of jesus and the resurrection. these were rejected because they were 'in bad taste' and 'would offend too many people'.
2- violent responses are massively overrepresented.
3- this kind of thing reflects on the people who publish them, not on the prophet. what does get me, though, is people who republish them. it is not about freedom of expression, how obvious is that. (it is very obvious.) you do not caricature black people because that is racism, the culture will not accept it. nor jews or the holocaust, because that is antisemitism, the culture will not accept it. and it is a legal offence in some countries. these are pre-emptive pressures. but this now, as freedom? come on. as in, grow up, people.

-

so. these three essays, a drama project for tuesday (mussolini gone wrong, it is the most beautiful play.), and then reading week before canimun and ottawa.

this weekend would have been the birkebeiner, had there been an ACTUAL WINTER. from where i sit i can see withered leaves on brown grass. this is mid-february, and there is no snow, and there has BEEN no snow at all, meaning i slowly implode every time anyone comments on such nice weather. this is not nice, this is HORRIBLE.

damn'ed greenhouse gas. pictures follow from years past/ the sake of nostalgia.
