and then our exile

Sunday, March 19, 2006 at 3:49 p.m.
did not need my wallet until midday next, when noor and i were going skiing at the wilderness centre.
then i realized it had vanished. and so here we are, tied, in this age of freedom and liberties universally proclaimed, to pieces of plastic and numbers inked onto paper. i literally feel its loss - am left vulnerable, exposed, bare, whenever i go out. is that not absurd - i miss it not because of itself, or sentimental value (the worn hundred-lira note from syria still crumpled into the pocket), but because of the identification which will validate me to the world. with it safe at my side, i could speak the language of society, could advance confidently into the wilds, i was strong and brave. this surgical separation a crippling, debilitating. when i speak i mutter gibberish; when i act it is schizophrenia; when i walk it is paranoia.
ahlan, ye brave new world.

yes! and by conforming he has betrayed me personally as well as the world at large, all those who believed in his defiant rebellion!
today he said he wanted to be black? and female? it is important for you to ask him about this.

ahh, so that's why Amir Sulaiman wasn't at jummah last week. He has a beautiful family, alhamdulillah, so I always notice when they're all there together.
So sorry about the wallet. I never pay much attention to mine when it's with me, but the loss of it would definitely be quite disconcerting.

...amir sulaiman goes to your masjid. and sidi yassir's your imam. i'm...jealous. in the good way.
(is there a good way to be jealous? it is still called jealousy? these are questions to be answered)
the wallet is back, because the good Lord gave it back to me. honestly, ni'mah & du'a, right there.

I think there IS a good way to be jealous. But I don't know all the intricacies. I think, as long as it's about a good thing, it's supposed to be okay to be jealous. Or something. In any case - may you only be jealous about good things, and may you be blessed with them, and may they be good for you inshaAllah.
Alhamdulillah for the wallet. =)
